P130 KNOUSE Norwich Univ BB photo Dewey close in.JPG (77886 bytes)

Future Admiral George Dewey 1837-1917

click photos to enlarge
c1862 Norwich University Military School baseball team photo featuring George Dewey, 8 ¾” wide by 6 7/8” tall, $15,000.00, offered by Tic and Tic

Those have to be the most archaic checkered baseball uniforms I’ve ever seen. Usually you only see baseball photos that early pictured in books. Not a very big photo, 8 ¾” wide by 6 7/8” tall, $15,000.00 see above. You can read about George Dewey at: http://www.spanamwar.com/dewey.htm . Lastly, Terry had another very impressive team photo of the St Paul Minnesota Colored Gofers, loaded with character, 7 ¼” tall by 9 ½” wide, $7,500.00 see below

Next at bat, was the booth of well-known hobby veteran Tony Bussineau of Lansing Michigan. Tony had an impressive 1899 railroad excursion poster for a football game between the University of Michigan, and University of Virginia. I’ve seen a number of these kinds of excursion posters for sports events over the years, but this one was the most impressive, simple really, but it had the “look”, 28 5/8” tall by 10 5/8” wide, $3,000.00 see below. Tony also had a nice 1930’s die cut easel back advertising sign for Royal Crown Cola picturing Jack Dempsey. Very nice little sign, first example I’d seen, a little rough, but still displayed nicely, good colors, nice graphics. The first thing I’d do is pull it out of the frame it was in, if I got it. I’d display it standing up, just as it was designed for. 19 ½” tall by 13” wide, $2,000.00 . Note, The sign sold opening day, I recall seeing it later in another booth, though can’t recall whose.

Right next to Tony, was Brian Dec’s booth of Lapeer, Michigan. Brian had a circa 1920’s red Grange doll, made of cloth, lots of character, 18” tall, $2,000.00 P60. Brian also had a nice little 1920’s basketball broadside for Brown Paper Mills vs. Globe Oil Refiners, 14” wide by 11” tall, $250.00 P61.

Next contestant, Ed McDonald of Ballpark Memories, from St. Augustine, Fl., had a c1915 metal binder, appeared to be aluminum, with an artistic baseball motif relief on the front, of a bat, balls, glove, catchers mask, and a quilted base. Very unusual, couldn’t find a makers mark, maybe made for keeping scores. Pretty cool, little grimy, but would probably clean up nice. 11” wide by 14” tall, $250.00 see below

Sal Dischiera of San Francisco, had a nice yard long/panorama style color litho football print titled “Skirting The End, Tearing Off Five Yards”, not sure of the age, appeared 1940’s, 45” wide by 15” tall, $800.00 . As I started looking it over, in the booth of John and Judy Burke of Collectible Classics Auctions, from Irwin, Pa., I asked how much? He informed me it was Dischiera’s, and he was contemplating buying it. John had a nice c1930’s box with a colorful football action scene on the lid containing children’s safety blocks, which caught my eye. 9 1/8” wide by 7 ¼” deep by 1 7/8” tall, it’ll be in they’re next auction.

SportsCards Plus, of Laguna Niguel, Calif. had a great, framed personalized autographed photo of Babe Ruth in a tub taking a bath. The Babe, looking up smiling, looked like he had about a three-day growth of beard, unusual. Incredible signature, I never knew Ruth had such nice handwriting. 14 7/8” wide by 12 7/8” tall. It’ll be in they’re upcoming December 2nd 2004 auction to be held at Sotheby’s in New York City.

c1920 trolley car sign for Tuxedo Tobacco featuring Walter Johnson, 21” wide by 11” tall, offered by Heritage Galleries in their September 2004 auction

Heritage Sports Collectibles of Dallas Texas had a really nice c1920 trolley car sign for Tuxedo Tobacco featuring Walter Johnson, 21” wide by 11” tall. see above The sign will be in their  September 10th and 11th 2004 auction www.heritagesportscollectibles.com P68. Condition was a little off, but still a really great sign. Heritage’s Consignment Coordinator Brittany Pratt graciously took the time to coordinate our photo shoot…of the sign. Definitely my favorite photo of the convention.

P70 MASTRO big spalding trophy in case.JPG (86757 bytes)

c1925 Spalding Trophy, booth of Mastronet, displayed for

August 2004 auction, lot #1372

Mastronet of Willowbrook, IL. had a great circa 1925 Spalding Trophy displayed in they’re booth, with a batter on top of a large baseball. Killer piece no question, and the condition was superb. 20” tall, the trophy is lot number 1372, and will be auctioned in they’re up upcoming auction on Thursday August 12th 2004. www.mastronet.com, minimum bid $1,000.00 .

Darla Bernhardt from Cincinnati had an outstanding c1910 baseball uniform from the Walker Gordon Farm Team of Cleveland. She had the complete uniform including the hat, shoes, socks, and belt, along with the pants and shirt. Amazingly she had a photo of the actual player who wore it back in the teens, plus a letter from a previous owner detailing it’s history. The uniform was classic light gray with rich maroon trim. The Jersey was the classic collared pull over type, with a great early-stylized WG sewn on the front, as well as on the hat. The hat was the of the short bill style. Darla had it displayed on a mannequin, which gave you the full impact of how great it was. It was definitely an eye catcher, and one of the better pieces at the show. $2,500.00 P71. It was the kind of thing you expect to see the National. see photo following page
