Story posted 7/2/05
I
got this sign on eBay in 2003 I think it was. The guy that sold
it was a serious golf collector. He told me he got this at a
garage sale in New Jersey. But he didn't know for sure if was
genuine folk art or something made up. I got it for around
$225.00 if I recall. I figured it looked pretty interesting
either way, so was willing to take a chance for that kind of
money. As I recall he quoted me around $75.00 to ship it from
the east coast to California, but when he went to send it, it
was something outrageous. It so happened he was moving to
Tiburon California two months from then, so we agreed he'd bring
it when he moved. So I waited two months to examine
it.
By the time I got it
I'd already concluded it was probably old, but may have been
made as a decorative piece for a bar or something. It's hard to
say for sure, and somewhat baffling. The back is definitely
ancient looking, and looks like it's from the teens. It's nailed
to the wall in a hallway (already had the holes), and very
heavy. Eventually I'll get it down to photograph the back for
this story. It's an interesting piece I'll write some more on
when time permits, as I've uncovered some references which add
to the investigation.
Further
commentary on this sign and the subject of
sports related folk art is forthcoming, please check
back. Thank you for your patience
