THE
25TH ANNUAL 2006 FALL
SAN FRANCISCO ANTIQUES SHOW
OCT 26-29
&
THE
13TH 2006 ANNUAL
SAN
FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL POSTER FAIR OCT. 27-29
FORT MASON
These
show are both in the same complex on the same weekend and they are
both exceptional shows. As usual I didn't see a lot of sports display
antiques, But here's some shots of what I did

Michael
Ogle of American Garage of Los Angeles was set up with a power
booth of great American folk art. He had this incredible
bicycle which is actually signed and dated J. Browne, Bedford,
MA Nov. 2,1866. I can't imagine a greater example of an early
American bicycle. Has the original paint with pin striping,
and the original seat. Price: $27,000.00 . Michael said he got
this out of Pennsylvania, and that he's had it in his bedroom,
and that it'd be going back there if he didn't sell it.

I
also saw a very rare George Bellows "Stag at
Sharkey's" print offered by John Berggruen Gallery of San
Francisco for $185,000. Very rarely will
you ever see an original Bellows print at an antiques show,
and that just goes to show how high quality this show is. I
don't keep an eye on the print world, but I don't think I've
ever seen an original Bellow's boxing print offered, even in a
catalog., in the twenty years I've been in the hobby. I'd seen
them in books, but this was my first opportunity to examine
one in person, up close. Interestingly, it was hanging on
the outer wall of the dealers booth, totally out of view of
the dealer...$185,000.00 print! I asked the lovely young ladies
in the booth if they'd had this print before. They said it was
the first one. This
is exactly why I always try to make this show, anything can
happen in this environment.

I
came in the last couple hours of the poster fair and only saw
this one piece I was taken with. Not very athletic, but what a
great piece. It's a 39 1/2" wide by 13 1/2" tall
print produced in Italy c1900, of men on a hill in the process
of launching gliders. Price: $1,800.00 without arm wrestling.I
didn't get it but sure looked hard.
