Brass
embossed top, Maker unknown, possibly Austrian
Purportedly
produced and sold during 1928 Amsterdam Olympics
I
got this c1920 sports table off eBay last month.
I had never seen one before and was really
amazed by it. When I received it
the first thing that struck me was how lightweight
the top is, as the photos made it look heavy. I sent out enquiries for information on
it to a number of acquaintances who might know,
including my soccer collector
friend Hans Gerretzen in Holland (eBay user
name: shalhans )..Shortly
thereafter I received an email informing me Hans
had listed one on
eBay
with a "Buy it now" price of
$425.00 (American Dollars)...only the top on his
was 19.4 inches wide, whereas mine is 23 1/2
inches. His
$425.00 BIN is less than what I
had to give for mine...plus I paid $135.00 for
shipping from England....while Hans is
charging $39.50 (American Dollars) from Holland!
Hans, Wow you are the first person I've found who has seen one of
these...OK so....tell me everything you know about this table..How do you know it's from the 1928 Olympics?....and who made them? Did the Olympic
committee have them made? Did a restaurant have them made?...please let me know the whole
story...you say yours is 19.4 inches across. (50cm). But the seller of mine says it is approx 23.5" wide by 19.7" tall....that is about 4 inches difference...please email me
all you know about it, thanks Hans Kindly
-Carlton
Hi Carlton,
This table is available in 3 different sizes. The bigger the size the rarer! It is an unofficial
Olympic item. It was made and sold during the 1928 Olympic games in Amsterdam. These are the games where souvenirs become first popular. Lots of companies made sporting related items but were (as still today) not allowed to use the
Olympic rings. although some did after
all) The maker is unknown but it is rumored
that it was made by an Amsterdam company. I
have sold some of these through Sotheby's sports auctions in London. This is all the information I have on this item and I 'm afraid that is all there
is. It is a stunning item. I used to have one hanging on my wall! Wonderful display item and getting more scarce by the day. Take care Carlton. Best Regards, Hans
I
have a lot of respect for Hans...Hans, like
myself has been in it a long time...When it
comes to soccer antiques he is the go-to
guy...However, he has not fully persuaded me
this is an Olympics piece from 1928...Reason
being, there is a race car, motorcycle and
airplanes, featured....and those were not
Olympic events.
During the
1928 Summer Olympics, there were 16 sports and 109 events in the tournament. In parentheses is the number of events per
sport.
Athletics (27)
Boxing (8)
Cycling (6)
Diving (4)
Equestrian (6)
Fencing (7)
Football (1)
Gymnastics (8)
Field hockey (1)
Modern pentathlon (1)
Rowing (7)
Sailing (3)
Swimming (11)
Water polo (1)
Weightlifting (5)
Wrestling (13)
What
would convince me would be documentation of some
kind. At this point I don't even know who made
it. The only thing I'm pretty sure on is that
it's European. based on the soccer players. I'm
not a furniture guy but the brass top strikes me
as East Indian. Really, genuinely, this table is
a mystery.
However,
what I know for sure is it is clearly of
exceptional artistic quality...The detail is unbelievable...painstaking...to
be revered..It would have to be the greatest
sports table ever made. That's why I had to get
it...even though it's not American.
I'll
be storing the base and hanging the top on the
wall in my hallway. The first thing I learned
when I got it was it requires very good lighting
in order to appreciate all that's going on. So I
plan to mount a light up high across the hall
from it...Also I may design a way for it to spin
while mounted on the wall...so viewers can
rotate it to easily examine each scene right
side up...like you see it turning featured
above. (if your browser is flash enabled)
