2018 FOHBC NATIONAL CONVENTION

August 2nd-5th - Huntington Convention Center, Cleveland OH

he Federation of Historical Bottle Collectors (FOHBC) held their yearly 2018 national convention in downtown Cleveland August 2nd-5th at the Huntington Convention Center. The bottle convention just happened to be the same week as the National Sports Collectors Convention. Over the years I've learned bottle shows usually have a good amount of other antiques than just bottles...particularly advertising seems to show up. And being from California I always thought there were much more antiques in the east and Midwest. So it was a perfect opportunity to see what antiquing in the Midwest was like...This was the third FOHBC convention I had attended...the first was in Reno in 2012...which I documented with a feature here on my site. The other was in Sacramento in 2016. I'm reluctant to compare the Cleveland convention to the other FOHBC conventions I've attended ....But I have to say west coast shows are a lot bigger and more exciting, and I can't understand why. There is a whole lot of landmass around Cleveland to draw from! Bottle collectors in Philadelphia could drive to Cleveland in 6 hours 36 minutes! Milwaukee 6 hours 31 minutes. Louisville 5 hours 8 minutes! But the convention was about 60-70% the size as the 2012 Reno and 2016 Sacramento...   In the west it seems like there is more camaraderie...and the dealers really know how to mix it up. That is, mix in other cool antiques with their bottles...which makes the show much more fun. There were only about a couple advertising dealers set up...There was a little bit of mixing here and there...but nothing like Reno or Sacramento was...Heck I found an incredible pair of 19th century fishing waders at the Sacramento show...READ ABOUT THAT ONE HERE...To put it in perspective...If you gave me a choice to go to the FOHBC Cleveland convention or go to the 49er Bottle Show in Roseville California, which is not even a national convention just regional...no question I'd take the 49er show...But the Cleveland show was nice to attend...The Huntington Convention Center was very nicely kept and the A/C worked perfect. Plus the staff was most pleasant and helpful...which makes for happy dealers....   Right, Carlton's one pick up at FOHBC bottle convention, very rare c1900 Jockey Club Whiskey Left, Carlton with seller on right of Jockey Club Whiskey bottle   There are few sports related antique bottles to be had...Of those few some are figural, some with graphics on the label...Though they are very rare and tough to find...Over thirty years collecting I've come across some...Above is one I found at the Cleveland show Jockey Club Whiskey...It appears to be pretty rare as I've not been able to find another example...Then below is my collection sports ones. I've got baseball, football, boxing, golf, polo, Motorcycle racing, and now Horseracing!   Above would be my personal collection of antique sports bottles...they're a pretty hard fought group seeing it 's taken thirty years to assemble. I suppose my favorite is the large motorcycle racer in the center, which is a 9" wide c1930 candy container from Argentina. It only has about 10% original paint but the positive is I know what colors were original. The smaller motorcycle racer to the left is a perfume bottle from France. The tall baseball bat between them is also a perfume bottle c1880 Tappan's League Bouquet. The two frosted glass baseball players, "Catcher" on left, "Pitcher" on right are marked with the name "Noble"...considerable research turned up very little although Cyrus Noble Whiskey was ruled out. They may have been tonic barber bottles...The Four Horsemen liniment bottle represents the Four Horseman of Notre Dame and is very rare, especially with the box.
