And then there was that $90,000.00 lapel pin...   2 1/2" tall c1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings pin   c1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings pin in line-up circled in red   ...Now we get to the part that really makes it so important...The pin belonged to the Treasurer of the 1869 Red Stockings, Edward E. Townley...and no doubt was worn to all the games...   ere would be, perhaps the greatest of John's marquee acquisitions....Before I begin, for the uninitiated, I'll explain, the 1869 Red Stockings of Cincinnati Ohio, which this pin represents, were the first all professional baseball team...If you research them you'll see plenty on them...and that notoriety of the "first pro baseball team" associates prominently this pin....Now...if you ever wanted to see an advanced piece of baseball memorabilia this is your chance...John was after this pin for years...A friend of his had it but didn't want to sell...John waited it out...Finally his friend agreed to sell it...for $90,000.00...   2 1/2" tall lapel pins generally aren't my thing...But after John elaborated on it so I understood the piece...phew! ...$90,000.00 seems like chump change compared to all the six figure pieces I've seen go in auctions. As far as baseball history this pin blows everything out of the water...Here's the whole scoop...   First let's start with the art work the pin is rendered in...It's a 2 1/2" tall lapel pin featuring a vertical bat with a wide belt, the kind worn by the ball players then, in the shape of a "C" for Cincinnati. Within the "C" is a base with a baseball on top...And that baseball...it's a lemon peel style...which is the end all for me...I once took a close in photo of it...years ago... in which you could clearly see the seams of the lemon peel...and I've about given my self a hernia trying to find those photos for this feature....to no avail...I don't know where they ever went...and it's 2,500 miles back to John's house...so you'll just have to trust me on those seams!...John's photos?...John's a great dentist I'm sure...but his photos...let's not go there...   John told me the bat, belt, base, and ball was the Red Stockings logo back in the 1869 era...I don't know who made it but it's intricate and very well done...Now we get to the part that really makes it so important...The pin belonged to the Treasurer of the 1869 Red Stockings, Edward E. Townley...and no doubt was worn to all the games...   The Black Sox Scandal took place during the play of the 1919 World Series. The Chicago White Sox lost the series to the Cincinnati Reds, and eight White Sox players were later accused of intentionally losing games in exchange for money from gamblers. The players were acquitted in court, but nevertheless, they were all banned for life from baseball. -Wikipedia   Moreover John says it was worn to the 1919 World Series in which the Red Stockings beat the White Sox in what was probably the most infamous baseball game ever played...Where the White Sox were accused of throwing the game for money.     *               *              *
l June 9, 2014 Carlton, It comes with 3 cabinet photos, (Aaron Champion, President, Townley, treasurer, Joyce, secretary). It also comes with an article from the Cincinnati Commercial published in 1919. The owner of the pin ,Townley, proudly wore it to the 1919 World Series in which the reds beat the white sox, (black sox). Most historical piece that I own! John
