THE
SPRINGFIELD OHIO ANTIQUE MALLS
So
I bedded down in a dumpy motel for the night in Richmond, and took off the next
morning for the one hour drive to Springfield Ohio. Springfield has...or I should say had...three of the biggest
antiques malls in the mid-west all within a mile or two of each other and
all right off Interstate 70...So whenever I'm in the area I definitely
stop and go thru them...Well...I got a little surprise when I got
into Springfield...the huge AAA antique mall had been turned into a sort
of indoor automotive swap meet called Grandpa's
Garage...
GRANDPA'S
GARAGE
I
took a quick run thru it and saw a few interesting things...One was a
"High Speed Gas" porcelain sign, probably 40" wide...I had
never seen anything like it in 30 years collecting....Looked like
something right out of the Barney Oldfield era...Just a dynamite piece and priced
right at $1,500.00, I thought. Another winner I saw was a 10 foot
long c1900 train station wood bench that was "as good as it
gets" quality...priced very reasonable at $1,200.00. Again...I've
collected 30 years and never seen a better or even close. The
automotive stuff was interesting but I liked the AAA Antiques Mall that
had been there before better.
SPRINGFIELD ANTIQUE CENTER
Next I headed to the Springfield Antique
Center...finally I was cooking with gas...The Springfield Antique Center was a very good mall...though I didn't
actually see too much in sports antiques...Just as I
walked in hanging high over head was a great stuffed moose head I
liked...Back in one corner I spotted a cool gymnastics pommel horse
priced at $550.00...real nice shape...There was a paper and print area
stuffed with a lot of good antique graphics...and I did find a couple of
sports things worth mention...one was a 1940ish poster, or large print, of
John L. Sullivan by the illustrator Emmet
Watson that is pretty rare...I
only recall one other example which I saw on eBay...and went
for some decent money as I recall...The one there in Springfield was
either $45 or $75...price tag was kind of muddled...Either price was a
good deal but it was framed and would have been a hassle to drag around
the rest of my trip...plus I "liked didn't love" it...so left
it...However...there was an interesting and very nice print of a football
player with a W on his chest...Interesting particularly because it
appeared to have been trimmed from a poster...question was what poster? As
I had never seen the image...so I snagged it since it could be rolled....And
then what did I do...I went and forgot it in a hotel room and left back
for California without it...now it's somewhere in New Jersey probably on
the wall of some housekeepers son's room!
The
one thing I found there at the Springfield Antique Center that impressed
me and I seriously considered buying was a c1930 hat box for the "Roswelle Hat" by the Middleton
Hat Company. On the front was a color illustration of a power boat race
with people cheering on the boat at shore side...At the forefront was a
close up of a guy driving a roadster, top down. Above it all was a bi-wing
airplane flying low overhead with MIDDLETON inscribed across the bottom
lower wing...It was only $95.00...but ya know...hat boxes take up a lot of
room in a collection...and I'm about out of room so I ended up leaving
it...But it was cool enough that even now I'm torn that I should have
gotten it!...I'd never seen it before and doubt I'll ever see
another...Heck what was I thinking...greatest powerboat hat box on the
planet...and all that action!

HEART
OF OHIO ANTIQUE MALL
Once
I'd seen the Springfield Antique Center it was just a short 6 minute drive
to the
Heart of Ohio Antique Mall... Heart of Ohio is about as big as
malls come...about the size of a Costco...Interesting layout...lots of employees milling around...three
main wings with off-shoots here and there...all full of antiques in a clean well kept
setting...and...air conditioned!...There's even a little snack bar type restaurant.
It's not your typical antiques mall...more like an event...It's so big you
can't help but anticipate making a find...Although I only made one
interesting find...I shot anything and everything that looked even
remotley interesting as I cruised the isles...Below is a link to photo
pages of what I saw...
Below
is my one find at the Heart of Ohio mall...a 10" wide by 6"
tall Munsing Wear counter top advertising display made of wood and
metal..

So
why
did I buy a two sided counter top advertising sign for Munsing Union Suits
you ask?...Good question....short answer...companion piece...Long
answer...It is a companion piece to one of the coolest sports antiques I
ever bought....Story goes...When I was just starting out collecting nearly
30 years ago....The April 1987 Smithsonian Magazine featured the baseball
collection of Barry Halper, who at the time had the world's largest baseball collection...I would pour over the photos trying to see stuff in
the panoramic shots of his room...and in the photo were four individual
12" tall die cut advertising figures of baseball players wearing
Munsing Union Suits...And so fast forward twenty eight or so years
later...I bought those die cuts....not another example....but
"thee" same die cuts in the photo...which once belonged to Barry
Halper...who passed away in 2005.
So one of these days I'm going to get them displayed....and this sign will
go in the middle of them...
